Mount Prospect, IL – As part of National Burn Awareness Week 2025, with the theme “Burn Prevention Starts Where You Live”, the nonprofit Camp I Am Me by Illinois Fire Safety Alliance emphasizes the crucial importance of burn prevention education in households and communities across the state. This annual campaign, taking place from February 2-8, aims to increase awareness about the causes of burn injuries, promote safety practices, and provide valuable resources for individuals and families to prevent burn injuries in their everyday lives.
Burns are one of the most common yet preventable household injuries, often resulting from accidents that could have been avoided with proper precautions. By raising awareness and sharing essential safety tips, the number of burn-related incidents that occur in homes and communities can be significantly reduced.
Some important safety tips to prevent burns include:
- Kitchen Safety: Turn pot handles inward when cooking, never leave cooking food unattended, and store flammable items away from heat sources.
- Bathroom Precautions: Set your water heater below 120°F and supervise children in the bath.
- Sleeping Areas: Extinguish candles before sleeping and keep heat sources away from fabrics.
- General Home Safety: Test smoke alarms regularly, charge devices safely, and store chemicals out of reach of children.
Burn awareness is crucial because these injuries can cause severe pain, scarring, disability, and even death. In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 398,000 people received medical care for treatment of burn injuries. By educating ourselves and others on burn prevention measures, we can protect our loved ones and create safer environments where burn injuries are less likely to occur.
“Each year, thousands of individuals are affected by burn injuries that could have been prevented through simple safety measures,” said Kelly McElligott, Camp I Am Me President. “National Burn Awareness Week is an opportunity for all of us to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of burns in our homes and communities.”
Join Camp I Am Me by Illinois Fire Safety Alliance in promoting burn prevention and safety during National Burn Awareness Week 2025. Together, we can make a difference in preventing burn injuries and ensuring the well-being of our families and neighbors.
