In the spring and fall, states throughout the U.S. turn their clocks forward or backwards for Daylight Saving Time. It is encouraged that residents use this opportunity to review, maintain, or replace their home’s smoke alarms as well.

Additional Tips
Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.
Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year, twice if possible. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
Don’t wait, check the date! Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
- Remove the smoke alarm from the wall or ceiling
- Look at the back of the alarm for the date of manufacture
- Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture
- Put the alarm back on the ceiling or wall if it is less than 10 years old.
