Adult Survivor Support Group: Mindful Breathing (virtual)

January 11

Survivor Support means bringing people together in order to help one another heal.

There are many different ways to heal and we hope to encourage further discussion by learning from one another, as well as learning from guest speakers and professionals.

Our Virtual Survivor Support sessions are open to adult burn survivors, care givers, first responders, and medical professionals so that we can all learn and help one another. Though each person’s healing journey may differ, we can encourage and root for one another and be present for and listen to one another.

We’ll cover topics such as our mental health and what it means, trauma and how it prevents healing, lovingkindness, mindful breathing, what we can do about depression and anxiety, moving through grief and many more.

We will have guest speaker, Matt Dewar, EdD, a professional educator, author, and well-being coordinator. He will explain what mindful breathing is and how it can be beneficial. He will also guide a simple breathing exercise, that one can do every day.

Mindful Breathing focuses your attention on your breath. While we breathe automatically, without thought, mindful breathing is a skill to be developed. It is about being present in the moment and being aware of how your mind and body feel. You can acknowledge your thoughts without judgement.

When practiced daily, even for a few minutes, there are many scientifically proven benefits including the ability to regulate your emotions and calm your nervous system which reduces anxiety, burnout, and negative thinking. It can also be effective in reducing the intensity of pain, according to a 2016 study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Zoom links will be sent out no less than 24 hours prior to each session. Registration is required – Register Here!
