Day at the State Fair (Springfield) – Volunteer Opportunity

August 16

Each year, nearly 50 volunteers join Camp I Am Me at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield to manage the Fire Service Tent and provide fire prevention education to fair-goers.

The tent allows kids and adults to climb on fire engines and slide down firepoles while also receiving educational material on fire safety through various stations and activities.

Help us reduce the number children and adults that attend the Camp I Am Me burn survivor support programs by helping make a difference in fire safety education. Invite your spouse, friends, and children – they are welcome to attend too! It’s also a great community service opportunity for Explorers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth groups.

The hours of tent operation are from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Volunteers are requested to work two 1.5-hour shifts, allowing three hours of the day to be spent enjoying the various fair activities and events.

If you are not able to drive directly to the State Fair, Camp I Am Me provides two suburban Chicago pick-up/drop-off locations for the day’s event:

  • The bus will depart promptly from Woodfield Mall (Schaumburg) at 5:30 a.m. and Northwest Homer Fire Protection District Station #1 (143rd Street & I-355) at 6:30 a.m.
  • The bus leaves Springfield to return home at 5:30 p.m. and expected return times are approximately 9:00 p.m. (Homer Glen) and 10:00 p.m. (Woodfield Mall).

Volunteers are provided snacks and drinks in the morning and evening on the bus, a State Fair admission ticket, parking pass (if driving personal vehicle), lunch, and an IFSA t-shirt.
