FDs Receive Life-Saving Smoke Alarms for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Through Be Alarmed! Program

The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program, a joint effort between Camp I Am Me and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, has received a donation of 20 Lifetone HL Bedside Fire Alarm units from Vision 20/20. These state-of-the-art devices work alongside existing smoke alarms in homes to alert deaf and hard of hearing residents with low-pitched tones, voice announcements, and even a bed-shaking mechanism, ensuring that everyone in the home is made alert of an emergency during a residential fire.

These important and potentially life-saving alarms have been distributed to 13 Illinois fire departments currently participating in the statewide smoke alarm installation program. Those departments include: Amboy, Bolingbrook, Bloomington, Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hillside, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lynwood, Niles, O’Fallon, Plainfield, and Sugar Creek. With a value of $250 apiece, the Be Alarmed! Program hopes to secure additional funding so that all communities throughout the state can benefit from these alarms.

Camp I Am Me and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are committed to the safety and well-being of all residents and will continue to educate and distribute smoke alarms, including those specifically designed for the deaf and hard of hearing community, throughout Illinois.

The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program, administered by Camp I Am Me and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, aims to distribute fire safety education materials and 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to fire departments in Illinois. The fire departments then provide this education while installing smoke alarms in homes that are at-risk for fires. Since its inception in 2018, the program has achieved phenomenal success with over 280 fire departments participating, 31,000 smoke alarms distributed to departments (valued at $723,200), 7,500 homes outfitted with smoke alarms, and 17,000 residents educated on smoke alarm maintenance, home fire safety, and fire escape plans.
